Peace lilies, Spathiphyllum, are members of the philodendron family and native to the South America and Central American Regions. The most common Peace Lily is the Clevelander which consists of long green foliage that grows directly from the soil. Plants bloom with white flowers on long stalks. As a indoor plant, the Peace Lily offers much more than color and texture. These plants can grow 1 to 4 feet tall.

Research conducted by NASA found the Peace Lily to be one of the top indoor plants for cleaning the air. This tropical plant breaks down and neutralizes toxic gasses such as benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. While we all appreciate cleaner air, it is the Peace Lily’s occasional white bloom that makes it such a popular indoor plant.

Low Light:

Like many popular indoor plants, Peace Lilies enjoy medium to low light. Peace Lilies will tolerate very low light conditions. The kind of light you need to provide will depend more on what you want your Peace Lily plant to look like.

Low Watering:

One of the most common mistakes in the care of Peace Lilies is over watering. Peace Lilies are far more tolerant to under watering than over watering. Never water Peace Lily plants on a schedule, rather, check them once a week to see if water is required. Simply touch the top of the soil to see if it is dry. Only if dry then proceed to water them. If the soil is still damp, the plant does not need to be watered. Some people will go as far as to wait until their Peace Lily starts to droop before watering. As these plants are very drought tolerant, this method does not harm the plant.

Fertilizing:

Peace Lilies do not need frequent fertilizing. Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer once or twice a year will be enough to keep the plant healthy & thriving.

Dust Magnet:

The wide leaves on Peace Lilies works as a dust magnet. They purify the air from dust. You should either wash or wipe down the leaves on a regular basis. This will help the plant to sunlight better. The leaves of your Peace Lily plant can also be wiped down with a damp cloth. They don’t require complicated cleaning.
